Summary

Urban population is increasing in all the urban areas in Nepal. More satellite towns are getting established and older cities are getting more crowded. Traditional agricultural systems are changing. Farming in or around urban and peri urban areas is getting more sophisticated and focused. The urban and peri urban agriculture (UPA) covers a wide range of activities resulting in production, processing, preservation, marketing and consumption of food. It also provides livelihood opportunities for the urban population. UPA also assists to bring better environment. This report contains the names, addresses and major activities of Government Organizations, Non Government Organizations, International Non Government Organizations, Community Based Organizations, Cooperative Organizations and Individuals who are involved in UPA activities in Nepal.

It was not an easy task to make this report because UPA has been given the least importance as far as agricultural development planning is concerned. Documentation in UPA is almost non-existant except for very few publications which focus on specific issues only. These publications have not been updated. There is a general acceptance that agriculture is synonymous to rural areas. Plans, Programmes and projects for agricultural improvement have rural focus and are rural community oriented. To many, urban agriculture is a fad or whim popular amongst very few who practice it for their own personal benefits. The contribution of UPA to the well being of urbanites and the development and sustainability of urban cities and towns has not been acknowledged and recognized. The general concept of farming being the sole responsibility of rural farmers living in rural areas dominate amongst policy makers. This has resulted in the complete isolation of this important group of food producers who have been feeding the millions in cities.

We have, after extensive survey, communication and consultation identified a large number of individuals, organizations, institutions who have participated in programmes which can help the UPA. Groups have been formed to safe guard business interests or to act as pressure groups to influence UPA policies.

Local UPA practitioners have formed community based organizations (CBOs) and community groups (CGs) to help each other or their trade. NGOs, INGOs, have programmes in urban areas as part of their other activities which have helped urban food production. We have included all of them in this directory.

We have also traveled extensively to meet and discuss UPA with the actual farmers who are directly involved in production, processing, marketing of food in urban and peri urban areas. Their names, addresses and specific activities have been included.

To make the directory more representative, local publications from various sources have been reffered to. The address given in them have been verified; checked and confirmed before being included in this directory.

This publication can be a useful companion/reference material for anyone who is interested in urban and peri urban agriculture in Nepal. The names and addresses presented in this publication was collected from within the whole country.

We have already mentioned above that it was a difficult job to collect, verify and include the names in this directory. There may be many other organizations which participate directly or indirectly in UPA development but which have not been included in this directory. We would be very glad to include them in future publications. The only reason why they were not included was because we did not know about them.
