City Farmer's Garden Gate
In June, 1999, artist Davide Pan created a distinctive new gate for City Farmer's Demonstration Garden. Old garden tools and metal scraps were assembled inside a metal frame. The gate can be raised and lowered by means of chains and pullies and counter weights made from local rocks.
CITY FARMER GATE: ART COMES TO THE GARDEN
A new gate has been installed at City Farmer's Vancouver Compost Demonstration Garden. Internationally acclaimed local metal sculptor, Davide Pan was commissioned to design the gate, based on a preliminary sketch by garden staff. Pan welded together old gardening tools and bits of rusty metal to create the piece that locks down by night and lifts up above the garden by day. Creaking chains and "rocks in bondage" counterweights give medieval flair to the old-fashioned pulley system.
Davide Pan is well known for his work with recycled materials. Several of his pieces were included in the touring "Hello Again", an international exhibit of recycled art that showed at the Vancouver Museum last year. Most recently he showed at the Simon Patrich Gallery (Continental Drift. The Surrealist Influence) and the Community Arts Council (Show of Hands). Pan's work is part of private and public collections throughout North America and Europe. Born in Schio, Italy, Pan currently lives and works in Vancouver.
City Farmer is a non-profit organization working in the field of urban agriculture. The Vancouver Compost Demonstration Garden is operated by City Farmer and funded by the City of Vancouver. You can view the gate anytime at 2150 Maple Street at 6th Avenue in Kitsilano. The Garden is staffed Wednesday through Saturday from 9 to 4. Call the Compost Hotline for more information: 736-2250. Davide Pan was born in Vicenza, Italy in 1965 and immigrated to Canada in his teens in 1981. After receiving a Studio Art Diploma from Capilano College, Davide returned to Italy to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice. While at the Accademia his art work was selected for a large exhibition and later purchased by the city of Venice and has since been part of the permanent collection of the Ca'Pesaro (the Venice Museum of Modern Art).
After returning from Italy, Davide continued his fine art studies at U.B.C., Emily Carr College of Art and Design and at Capilano College while showing extensively in and outside of Vancouver. His work is part of private and public collections in Canada, the USA and Europe.
He is currently living and working in Vancouver.
